The proposal for the site on Montague Road, West End is for the location of a new mixed use artist’s village; a creative, collaborative and dynamic public space which is truly unique within Brisbane. The proposal aims to create a unique space for artists to live, work and exhibit, as well as an exciting new community space within the West End and Brisbane communities. The exterior of the building is to remain the same however the interior is to be remodelled with the addition of an additional storey. The interior will be modelled in an industrial style with the incorporation of bright, vivid colours, natural materials as well as green spaces. The design aims to create a fresh new approach to creativity, collaboration and the incorporation of the public realm into this process. The artist’s village aims to become a vibrant cultural and social hub within the heart of Brisbane.

These spaces include public workshops, an additional semi-private exhibition space, a number of social and relaxation spaces, a rooftop restaurant, gymnasium and a social green space for residents. These additions are designed to enhance the community aspect of the project, creating a welcoming public space. The current stairs, elevator and toilet facilities are to remain in their current location.
Industrial Influences
Industrial inspiration has been drawn from New York style industrial lofts, creating an open space with great potential for creativity. The use of materials such as concrete, white washed brick, steel and weathered metals help in creating this atmosphere.
Natural Materials
The use of natural materials aids in breaking up the industrial feel of spaces, creating a more intimate and welcoming space. The use of materials includes timber, white paint, glass and fabrics.
The Power of Colour
The use of vibrant colours in strategic ways creates fresh spaces within a building creating an environment condusive to creativity.
Green Space
The incorporation of Green Space creates not only reduces the impact of the building but creates a more pleasant environment for people to live, work, relax and enjoy. People are inherently drawn to nature and enjoy being in and around natural spaces.
The project employs the use of a cutout through the core of the building which allows natural light to penetrate throughout the entire building. The use of this cutout system also creates a strong link between different levels of the project creating a visual permeability. This design element helps create a visually and physically open space for public use. As visitors move and experience the different spaces within the building they are privy to the creative process which has produced the works on display.
Because natural light is able to reach further into the building a green wall is much easier to maintain. The introduction of a green wall helps to further the unique feel of the building as a creative and social hub.
